“The Narrow Way”

Jesus said in John 14:6 ” I am the Way the Truth and the Life, no one comes to Father but through me.” We live in a day where pluralism and moral relativism dominate our cultural climate and define what we call politically correct. Everyone’s belief system is acceptable and real to them. We must respect different moral views as equally respectable as our own. Everyone will go to heaven simply because there are many ways to God. Therefore the radical Muslim who believes that he is going heaven because he detonated a bomb attached to himself and murdered innocent people in the name of Allah is just as capable of going to heaven as the Christian who forgives his enemies. The aborigine man in Africa who worships an idol is just as capable of entering eternal rest as the man who lives in deep moral depravity in a first world developed nation. The reason? Because no on has the right to make moral judgments of truth on a another human being.

Think this is absurd? Well then you are a reasonable person. Because obviously and logically there must be a right and wrong. You can have two wrongs, but not two rights. God cannot be the god of the Koran who expects his disciples to kill people who will not submit (the literal translation of Islam) and the God of the Bible who loved the world so much he gave his only Son to save it. They are diametrically opposed. There must be a right and wrong, a good and evil. Morality is not relative to one’s perspective. Morality is defined by the creator of mankind in whom we bear his image. As moral creatures we all have been given a conscience to know right from wrong (Rom 2:15.) We do not need anyone to tell us murder, or lying, or dishonoring your parents is wrong, it is deep in the moral conscience of every human being. Furthermore it is revealed in the Ten Commandments of God. However, through repeated violation of our conscience we deaden the conscience and no longer can hear the faint voice of reason( Titus 1:15,) and as scripture puts it, “They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.” (Eph. 4:18-19 ESV)

This is the moral state of many in the world and the only way to rationalize their sinful rebellious state and to justify their unbelief is to commit rational suicide and deny the truth of the gospel , as Rom 1:22 puts it, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. He is the ultimate standard of truth, defining what is morally right and wrong. And he is the source of true, eternal life to all those who place their trust in him. Why can he make such an exclusive claim? Because he is the only begotten Son of God. Jesus is the only accurate reflection of God the Father and therefore the only source of truth, therefore the only way to obtain eternal life. Is this a narrow way of thinking? Absolutely. Jesus said himself, “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” ( Matt 7:14) And he also instructs us to “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (Luke 13:24.) There is only one way to heaven, one way to the Father, one way to be forgiven of sin, one way to be made right with God, one way to satisfy all our deep inner longings… Through Jesus Christ and unconditional faith in the sacrifice of the cross.

  1. Rob,
Great to hear your voice enter the blogosphere… although I already spend too much time reading blogs, and this might just make matters worse. :) Nonetheless, with friends like Justin and I living hours away, a blog is yet another means to encourage and edify your brothers and sisters. So keep at it.
It was good to read your thoughts. It made me thankful that God opened my eyes so that I would see the only way to know my Creator, and be forgiven. It really is such an unpopular thing to say that there is only one way to God… it is good to be reminded of the logical absurdity of the popular position, and to be freshly thankful that we are on the narrow way.
Look forward to reading future posts from you, brother.
    Elisha
